The Walk

This was our 7th visit to Ickleford and our 6th to the Plume of Feathers.

This walk was similar to the route that walked in 2023. From the pub, we turned left along Chambers Lane before taking to a footpath by Ickleford Sports and Recreation Club. We crossed the A600 and turned north for a short distance. The we turned onto Icknield Way to the west. Continuing to the west, this footpath turned into Hambridge Way. At about 1.1 miles into the walk, we turned left towards Westmill Lane.

At Westmill Lane, 1.6 miles into the walk, we hit a snag – the access road to Westmill appeared to be closed for resurfacing. Eventually the guys working at the other end of Westmill Lane waved us through as they had just finished the work. From there, we walked onto a gravel footpath through Oughtonhead Common. At 2.3 miles into the walk, we had a short break by a pool on the River Oughton, then proceeded to the spring that is the source of the river, 2.5 miles into the walk. Near the spring we turned left at footpath crossroad. This footpath took us back to the gravel footpath that we had already used through Oughtonhead Common. This gravel footpath took us back to the A600 some distance south of where we crossed the A600 on the way out. We crossed the road and turned north along the footway until we got to Turnpike Lane. We then walked along Turnpike Lane, Arlesey Road and Upper Green until we got to the pub for our lunch

The map of the walk is shown below
