The Walk

This was our 16th visit to The Rising Sun.

From the pub we crossed Dane End Lane to a footpath that took us to Weston Church car park. From the car park we took another footpath across a field for about 0.2 miles then we turned south towards Warren’s Green.

At Warren’s Green we turned south west until we got close to the Great Ashby area of Stevenage. From there, we walked along field edge boundary footpaths. At the extreme southerly point of the walk we had good views of all the
ripe crops in East Hertfordshire district. At 3.85 miles into the walk, we turned north east for 0.4 miles then turned north until we got to Dane End Lane. From there, it was a short walk along the road to the pub for our lunch that had been ordered at the start of the walk.

The map of the walk is shown below

Halls Green

The Rising Sun has an interesting history – the building was an 18th century cottage owned by the Dimsdale family. Baron Dimsdale received his title and wealth from Catherine the Great as a reward for inoculating her and her son, the Grand Duke, against smallpox.

Fairclough Hall now contains a number of different businesses. To the south west of the hall there are earthworks that represent a medieval hall and its associated ponds
